It was an absolutely beautiful day here on Garrison Landing. The air had that perfect autumn feel, and the annual Garrison Art Center Craft Fair was in full swing, which brought a nice energy to the waterfront. It was one of those satisfyingly busy days: a mix of organizing, painting, cleaning, and gardening, plus a run for groceries and some booze of course.
At the end of the day time to relax on our deck with a nice drink Boulevardier felt like the right call.
I used the Black Dirt Bourbon, and I have to say, it’s a fabulous choice. Being a Hudson Valley spirit, it felt right for the day. It lays down a great base of rich caramel and sweet corn with a pleasant bit of oak and cinnamon spice. I paired it with a longtime favorite, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, and went with Amaro Lucano for the bitter component.
The interesting thing about the Lucano is the distinct orange note you get from it right away, before any bitters are added. A little research confirms that bitter orange peel is a key botanical in its secret recipe. So the Regan’s Bitters don’t really introduce a new flavor—they just amplify what’s already there, tying the whole drink together nicely.
There’s a quiet satisfaction that comes from a productive day, and it’s matched by the simple pleasure of a well-made drink. A perfect end to the afternoon.
