I first heard of Bardstown Bourbon Company at an Information Technology Alliance conference in Scottsdale, Arizona. As a devoted ITA member, I always enjoy the conversations as much as the presentations. One of the presenters represented the operations software provider for Bardstown, and during a discussion over dinner he spoke enthusiastically about the quality of their whiskey.
I eventually tried their bourbon and loved it, although I had only enjoyed it neat. A couple of weeks ago, I decided to try their rye whiskey, Bardstown Origin Series Rye, and naturally wondered how it would compare to two of my favorites: Koval Single Barrel Rye from Chicago and Redemption Straight Rye from Lawrenceburg, Indiana.
It came out strong. Rich, smooth, and layered with cherry, spice, and oak—one of those bottles that just makes you want another sip.
When it came time to make a Boulevardier with this remarkable rye, I knew I had to go light on the supporting cast. Here’s the recipe:
- 2 oz Bardstown Origin Series Rye
- 1/4 oz Cocchi Torino Vermouth — my go-to sweet vermouth
- 1/8 oz Meletti 1870 — a favorite for both its flavor and beautiful color
- 2 dashes Blood Orange Bitters
You know the rest.
The result was absolutely delicious. I always build my cocktails around whichever ingredient I want to take center stage, and today Bardstown was the lead. It delivered a standout performance.
