I created this wonderfully complex yet delicate Negroni after discovering Monopolowa Dry Gin.
It came together in a exceptional opera of flavors. You see there is an infinite universe of ingredients for creating unique Negroni cocktails, in this one the gin leads the way in a resonant sextet of flavor.
The Gin: Monopolowa Dry Gin from Vienna Austria
The Vermouths: Cocchi Americano, white and Carpano Antica, red
The Amari: Aperol and Cynar
More: Dutch’s ProhiBitters, slice of orange
Monopolowa is a subtle yet fulfilling gin, it has been distilled by the Altvater Gessler – J.A. Baczewski Companies in Vienna for well over 200 years. It is made in a traditional manner from select varieties of potatoes, triple distilled with juniper berries, orange and lemon peels, coriander, anise, fennel and ginger. The flavor is delicate and yet has much character.
I chose to use two vermouths, a white and a red and two amaro to create a balmy translucent pulpit for the gin. The play of flavors harmonized nicely, but I needed one more voice to complete the composition and chose to add a few drops of Dutch’s ProhiBitters which emanates a blend of citrus with notes of licorice, hibiscus, ginger root and coriander.
Recipe
1 1/2 oz Monopolowa Dry Gin from Vienna Austria
3/4 oz eachCocchi Americano and Carpano Antica Formula
3/4 oz each Aperol and Cynar
2 drops Dutch’s ProhiBitters, slice of orange
Of course good ice, attention to measures and skilled stirring contribute to this ethereal drink that swoons and enchants like a performance of Gioachino Rossini’s La Cenerentola (Cinderella) At Vienna State Opera.
